Black History Month starts on the 1st of February and ends on the 1st of March; that’s a total of 28 days to celebrate the black legacy. Carter G Woodson, an incredible historian, suggested honoring African Americans during the proposed time to raise awareness of Black history during 1926. However, the celebrations didn’t start until the 1970s.
The Theme For 2022’s Black History Month
Since 1976, every Black History Month celebrate endorses a specific theme — this year, the theme is ‘Black Health and Wellness’. This theme explores initiatives, rituals, and activities practiced by the Black community. Moreover, it’s meant to cherish the contribution of Black health and wellness practitioners in Western medicine through the years.
Ways to Celebrate the Black History Month
To each their own — there’s no one way of celebrating Black History Month. You could stay in to attend Black History Month celebrations virtually or participate in online events with your family to affirm the belief in the legacy and to preserve the accomplishments for life. Moreover, you could learn how to support black men and women who have been a target of structural racism for years but have still made it to the top with their noteworthy contributions. You could also donate to or volunteer at charities that support equality and anti-racism equity.
Lastly, because Black-owned businesses are still faced with structural racism that challenges their ability to serve within the community, we need to support black-owned businesses. A total of 40 percent of business owners were forced to close their doors between February and April of 2020 (i.e., the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic), which summed up to be twice the decline white business owners has to experience.
